The Alexander Technique in Daily Life

by Jim Scarano

Jim Scarano has been an exponent of the teachings and findings of Frederick Matthias Alexander for over 25 years and was one of the first pioneers for the propagation of the technique in Sydney Australia in the mid-seventies. Mr Scarano is a qualified Alexander Technique teacher, having trained both in the UK and in Australia. He has been teaching the technique as a certified teacher continually for six years since 1992.

The strengths of The Alexander Technique in Daily Life lie in the clarity of description and the depth of understanding of the fundamental principles involved.

The Alexander Technique in Daily Life takes the reader right into the teaching session, describing in detail, with the aid of illustrations, the delicate nature of the many fundamental procedures and quite a number of procedures which have evolved since Alexander's time.

Concepts such as Inhibition, Non-Doing, Direction, End-Gaining and many more come to life as Mr Scarano paints the pictures using very simple language that the average reader will have no problem understanding.

To help the reader more easily cope with the many terms and phrases used by the Alexander Teaching profession at large, Mr Scarano has compiled a Glossary at the front of the book.

Some eighty illustrations are used over the nine chapters, significantly in the chapters on tuition and re-education. Further illustrations appear in the chapter for musicians and music making. This chapter should be of particular interest to musicians all over the world as it clearly shows the areas in which every musician can improve the quality of playing and the comfort in which music is played.

The book offers copious information for student and teacher alike. If you are a teacher you will want to try out some of Mr Scarano's developed procedures and ways of working. If you are a student taking lessons or undergoing training, you will want to practice the self-help procedures designed to enhance your understanding and speeding up your progress in the mastery of the concepts and principles.

The general interested reader will find in this book information relating to private tuition, classes and workshops. As well as this, homework assignments have been included which can be performed by anyone, whether or not private lessons have been undertaken.
